The guide folder in each apartment
offers comprehensive information and brochures on where to eat and
drink, places of interest, bus, train, and boat timetables, and
details of the local history and environment. The woodland
garden is open to holiday visitors and
the guest Tower Lounge, with
its vistas across Loch Awe, the mountains, and Kilchurn Castle,
is a unique feature. A laundry and drying room is available on the
ground floor.
We regret that no pets are permitted.
Lochawe village (5 minutes walk) has a general store/Post
Office and a pub serving bar meals. Summer cruises on the loch and
to Kilchurn Castle. The famous West Highland railway offers 3 trains
a day each way to Oban and Glasgow from Lochawe station.
St Conans
Tower nestles in a natural tapestry of woodland and water. Overlooking
Loch Awe, but secluded in its own wooded landscape
of redwoods, fir trees, oaks, birches and rowan, this historic house
offers a haven of tranquillity. So many of our visitors comment
on the stress-free environment, as well as the relaxation provided
by the comfortable, well-equipped apartments, each with their own
video, book, and CD collections. Only 5 minutes from Lochawe
village shop and pub with access to the A85 west
to Oban and the Isles (or
east to Glen Coe, Loch Lomond or Stirling). Also
Lochawe railway station on the Glasgow-Oban
West Highland Line. The Towers situation could not be
more convenient for touring the Highlands or simply enjoying the
spectacular setting and scenery. Offering short breaks or week-long
holidays, St Conans Tower is an ideal getaway.
St Conans Tower was built by the Duke of
Argylls great-grandfather, Walter Douglas Campbell, at the
end of the 19th century. Walter was a self-made architect
and delighted in building unusual properties, the best known of
which is St Conans Kirk in Lochawe
village. The Tower itself, built of granite from Cruachan
mountain, was intended as a winter home for the Campbell family
who lived on Innis Chonain, the island just off
the shore of Loch Awe. Through its 100-year history,
the Tower has undergone several ownerships as private dwelling,
boarding house, youth hostel, and B&B establishment, before
becoming both a residential home and self-catering apartments for
the present owners, Stephen and Shona. Visitors have the added luxury
of the unique Tower Lounge at the top of the
house, from which panoramic views across Loch Awe,
Kilchurn Castle, and the mountains, enhance afternoon tea, or
evening drinks. As well as conservatory style furniture, a writing
desk with a postcard selection and books about the area and its
wildlife are provided. In 1996 the house was renovated and refurbished, and we continue to improve both the house and
garden to create a comfortable permanent home for ourselves and
temporary home for apartment guests. Visitors receive a warm welcome
and can call on the owners at any time should they need anything.
The house is fitted with the latest fire safety precautions and
has the added advantages for visitors of a laundry/drying room,
carport for bicycles, and ample car park.
